Learning Outcome
By completing this activity, you will experiment with using an AR-assisted tool during simultaneous interpreting and reflect on how it affects your comprehension, attention, and decision-making under cognitive load.
This activity focuses on your experience using the tool and your real-time decisions, not on interpreting accuracy.
Instructions
1. Get familiar with the AR-assisted tool
- Install Google Translate on your phone.
- Learn how to use the camera / live image translation feature (also known as Google Lens translation).
- You may:

- Or explore other online resources or AI tools to understand how the feature works.
2. Prepare your practice environment
- Use a laptop or tablet to play the assigned presentation video with visible slides.
- Keep your phone ready so you can point the camera at the screen when slides appear.
3. Watch the assigned presentation video (below)
- Open the provided video of a speaker presenting with on-screen slides.
- Make sure you can clearly see the slide content on screen.
4. Round 1: Interpret while learning to use AR support
- Perform simultaneous interpreting in real time while watching the video.
- When slide text appears:
- Point your phone at the screen to view the translated overlay using Google Translate.
- Try using the AR output during your interpretation.
- In this round, focus on the technical side:
- Getting familiar with using the camera / live translation feature
- Coordinating the tool with real-time interpreting
- Understanding how the tool fits into your interpreting workflow
5. Round 2: Interpret with selective AR use
- Replay the same video and interpret again.
- This time, focus on intentional decision-making:
- When AR output helps with comprehension
- When ignoring it helps you maintain interpreting flow and focus
- Pay attention to how the tool affects:
- Your attention
- Your delivery
- Your overall interpreting experience
6. Complete the reflection
After finishing both rounds, write a short reflection responding to the prompts below.
